As a little girl, I was equal parts tomboy and girly girl. I dreamed of living in California, being fearless, carefree—and, most importantly, being much better on a skateboard than I actually was. This painting is my alter ego: the cool, confident California girl I imagined I could be. She actually emerged over an older painting, with pieces of that original work still showing through, almost as though she had been hiding there all along.
Look closely and you’ll find the word “ME” tucked into the background more than once, a playful reminder that beneath all the layers, daydreams and different versions of ourselves, there’s always a little bit of “me” hiding underneath.
